Mental Health Advocacy and Speaker
Mental health advocacy is one of my many passions to serve humanity under the growing deluge of mental illness. I volunteered as an Online Carer Champion for Beyondblue for a number of years, supporting families affected by mental illness. Using my lived experience of supporting my own family with depression, allows me to connect and counsel anyone in a carer role through one-on-one or group sessions to build resilience and identify coping strategies.
Through my advocacy work, I aim to raise compassion and understanding for people who take on the carer role for loved ones and friends with mental illness. This passion birthed the online carer community 'A Black Dog About the House'. The community purpose is to raise awareness and understanding for people who are supporting loved ones and friends with mental illness.

In 2016 I shared my personal experiences that changed my life as a contributing author of the internationally acclaimed 'Grief Diaries' and 'Real Life Diaries' anthology series. I co-authored two books that focus on lived experience with grief and chronic pain. In 'Grieving for the Living' I shared my account of navigating a fragile relationship affected by depression while raising awareness of the effects of stigma.
The award-winning book 'Living with Endometriosis' is a collection of stories exploring life through
the eyes of women living with this painful medical condition. After 20 years of chronic pain,
I now advocate for women's health in a health system that sometimes forgets that invisible illness can
leave deep scars on the mind, body and spirit.

'Carmela has changed my life in so many ways. I was struggling and without direction. I played small because l didn't know how to get out of this limiting mindset. She guided me gently and opened a space of compassion and connection. I am so thankful and grateful of her skills to open a heart like mine that was closed for so long due to grief and childhood neglect. Thank you Carmela for what you do. She is amazing'.
